Cowgirl Meat Co. is a small, woman-owned meat company in the mountains of Montana that produces naturally raised beef and pork. The brochures hadn’t been redesigned since the 80s, so until 2015 the owner finally conceded and let me spruce (see what I did there?) them up, even though he still had approximately 1,000 of the old ones left in stock. It was a hell of a printer deal he made in 1984. It’s always more fun to work on a project that you’re personally invested in, and this brochure advertising my favorite rustic, family-friendly dude ranch in Michigan was one I especially enjoyed. We wanted the scarf to have a distinctly Western look, pulling from Pendleton Woolen Mills for color and pattern inspiration. I created a full-color scarf as well as a more subtle monochrome version, both of which were available for purchase at the event. They wanted their brand to be elegant, clean, and contemporary with a “farmhouse” feel. The watercolor style of the olive branch paired with the loose script font helped to convey the comfortable and approachable feel she was going for, while the more modern central font and gold color brought a touch of elegance and refinement to the design. The new owners wanted to refresh the brand, but honor its history by including some of the original elements. The unique skull was part of the original ranch logo and the skull itself is still mounted to the cross rail of one of the property’s entrances, nearly 100 years later. For this design, I wanted to create something bold and rustic that could translate well to apparel. I redrew the skull from the original logo, simplifying the lines to give it a cleaner look, and created a stacked logo variation featuring the cattle brand as well as a couple of alternate icons. Getting out of my comfort zone was difficult at first, but eventually, after hundreds of inky swipes, I landed on an illustration that captured the essence of the brand, which the client loved.
